I Can Play Too!

These are a few weeks old, but Micah ventured out into our mall playground the other day. He had lots of fun wandering.

Micah's First Birthday

We celebrated Micah's first birthday on Saturday with an ice cream themed party. Our plan was to have the kids play in the pool and slip n slide outside, but it started storming right as the party started! We played inside for an hour or so (nobody complained!), then the kids played outside in the rain for a while and had a blast.
(The pictures are mostly out of order. Sorry!)

The cake smash. It was awesome.

Jonathan informed me gently afterward that it was entirely too much cake for a child :)

I love cake! More!

Mimi and Anna had to give him a bath afterward.

Mom and Dad with our one year old.

Hanging with Ryan.

Reading with Mattie

Hugging cousin Davis.

Reading a new book with Aunt Gail.

Davis and Aunt Gigi

Snuggling Mimi.

With Aunt Anna

The Echerd family was moving/rearranging and didn't have space for their roller coaster anymore. They generously gave it to us for free! What a blessing! The kids had a blast!

They definitely had to learn to take turns!

Ice cream sundaes!

We had two Mattie/Maddies and two Davis(es)

Instead of cupcakes, I baked the cake into cones. The "ice cream" is frosting.

We asked for people not to bring gifts (we have plenty!). But the grandparents were exempted. Nana and Pop gave him this ball ramp thing. He loves it. It is right up his alley right now.

The table in the back is Micah's gift from the Moseleys. I love it! We had all the kid snacks on it, and the just spooned all the cheez-its and grapes onto their plates. It rocked!

Anna and Caroline Morgan

Watching the festivities under the umbrella.

Davis was hanging with the big kids on the slip n slide.

So fun!

A little brother/sister love...and war...

Micah at One Year

We actually had a well-visit at a normal time! Micah's stats are:

20 lbs. 12.5 oz. (I can't remember the percentile she said it was, but it was near the middle)
30 inches tall (75 percentile. The doctor said I'll be looking up to my boys one day.)
47.25 head circumference

As per our custom, they discovered Micah had an ear infection at his well visit again. That's three well visits in a row. In my defense, I did take him for a sick visit on Monday, but the nurse practitioner missed it. He had a huge clump of wax in his ear, but they still should have found it.
The doctor also wants to put him on iron supplements; Josiah had the same problem. Micah also couldn't get his vaccines because he was sick. He also has some ongoing skin issues, which could be linked to his excema or could be allergy-related.

  • Micah is sleeping through the night, normally 7:30-8 p.m. until 6:30-7 a.m. He's still taking a morning and afternoon nap.

  • Loves to crawl and pull up. He's getting steadier at walking, but I'd say he still has about a month before he's independently walking.

  • Just a few more words. He has renditions of brother, book, no-no and has the cutest little "bye-bye" and wave combo. I need to work on getting that on video.

  • Favorite foods: blueberries, grapes, watermelon, cantaloupe, cucumbers, yogurt, ham, sometimes cheese, frozen waffles (still frozen, doesn't prefer them toasted), bananas. Still not a huge bread fan, unfortunately.

  • Drinks with a sippie cup really well, but he really loves drinking from a straw! I may get him one of those kinds of cups to see if he drinks more with it. He can go a long stretch without nursing (up to 8 hours so far). We'll work on weaning this month, and I'm thinking the morning feeding will be the last to go.

One big development in the last month is he has learned the meaning of the word "no" and is testing his boundaries. I can see differences here with him and Josiah. When Josiah was this age, I told him no, redirected him, and generally he stayed away from the area or object. Micah gravitates to the same trouble areas: the stairs, the baker's rack, the prayer board to eat the pictures, standing in the bath, toilet/toilet paper, and dropping food on the floor from his high chair. He crawls toward the area; if he knows I'm there he turns around to see if I'll discipline him. I say no, and he gives it another shot. Occasionally he'll turn away, but normally he'll proceed. Sometimes he "obeys" with a tantrum, banging his hands on the floor and burying his face in his lap. I couldn't believe he was having that reaction already! Perhaps learning from his older brother?

Speaking of older brother...He and Josiah's dynamic is starting to change. Josiah is a little rougher with him sometimes, and Micah is starting to fight back. He gets upset when Josiah takes a toy from him, or when he doesn't get to keep a toy he snatched (envision the aforementioned tantrum here). Sometimes he hits back! Josiah enjoys reporting to me when Micah is doing something wrong. Sometimes he's tattling and sometimes I appreciate him letting me know Micah is endangering himself. Josiah still likes him, but little brother is always messing with his stuff!

Further illustration of the dynamic. Josiah does get all up in his grill; can't say I blame Micah.

But they still love each other! All those issues at the end sound like he's a rough child, but I feel like he's still relatively easy. I know all of these changes are just normal development. Babyhood is fading fast!
